Jul. 4—NEW LONDON — Firefighters rescued people trapped in an apartment building fire Wednesday night, according to officials.
The New London Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment building on Nautilus Drive at around 9 p.m. for a reported fire. At the scene, they saw a heavy fire coming from the back of the building, the New London Firefighters Local 1522 said in a Facebook post.
Shortly after the first battalion arrived, they struck a second alarm due to the volume of the fire and potential people trapped inside, according to the post. One truck rescued occupants from the third-floor balconies, the post said.
Waterford, Norwich and other nearby departments responded to the scene to assist with the blaze. Norwich firefighters said initial crews "fought a large volume of fire on the second and third floor while saving a majority of the building."
Photos taken during the day Thursday showed damage mostly on the third floor and the roof.
Further information was not immediately available.
The fire is being investigated by the fire marshal's office.
